Jing About
Translating For Kidlink

Last winter, I accidentally discovered Kidlink, an organization for kids’ communication and education, and quickly became involved as a volunteer translator for Kidlink’s Chinese branch. My work consists of three steps: retrieve, translate, and post. Simple as the process is, happiness ensues. I am delighted to find a better translation for a word, seeing a new web page posted on the Kidlink website, and witnessing the community growing from one translator to a dozen.

I later took on the voluntary job of coordinator, acting as a bridge between proofreaders and translators. Even though there are twelve members only, each translator’s background is distinctive. They come from different parts of the world and speak different languages. In the process of contacting translators and answering technique questions, I found my place in a really diversified community. I heard my own voice in this team, instead of simply participating. What I have gained is much more than just the honor of having my name appear on translated web pages, but a bunch of friends as well as experience in a diversified community and the capacity to take a leading role in a highly co-operative effort. It has been an exhilarating experience to witness the team’s growth from one lone translator, me, to a cooperating group of twelve.

I am currently working on a translator’s guideline with the proofreader of the team. It’s an exciting and brand new process for a new development and me for Kidlink Chinese. I hope I am able to continue this work and see it through to fruition.

I grandually found out that I have gained great sense of achievement by volunteering for Kidlink and I have become interested in international studies due to Kidlink such a fascinating pool. I will send you other pages as soon as possible, for I recently discovered that the program Who-I-am is truly valuable.

Thanks again. Jing , November 2005.
