Kidlink: Translating The Who-Am-I? Workshop

You are invited to translate our workshop into your language, and have it posted on Kidlink's web site for free use by anyone. The translation will be Kidlink's property. Only in this way can we ensure that the contents remains free for everybody to use. If interested, inform me about your intent to avoid double work

It took me 11 hours to translate the workshop, including presenters' notes, from English into Norwegian. The pages contain many words, but there are many repetitions. You may use more time depending on:

how well you know Kidlink and the Who-Am-I? program
your proficiency as a translator from English ( use English as source, not some translation!)
your proficiency in editing web pages after having translated by overwriting the English language text.
your general typing skills

If you are moderately familiar with Kidlink, Who-Am-I?, have average translations skills, and some web editing experience, then 20 hours may right for you.

Base your translation on the dirinfo.html page. From this page, dive quickly into pages to be translated, and make progress notes in the rightmost column to simplify your work.

Some English words might not translate exactly (or be the correct term) as they are in another language. Use words that make sense. For instance.... Patti uses the term "learner outcomes" because this is what "we call these skills that we want kids to learn." They might be called "frameworks" in another country.

Most pages' bottom menus are similar. Save time by translating one of them, correct links, and then copy the new menu over the English text. For example, these three bottom sections (not all pages have them, though!):

Translating the pictures

Instead of including your translated text into the top graphics at http://www.kidlink.org/kie/nls/english/workshop/fifteenminute.html, edit the top portion of the Norwegian translation. This page uses graphics with not included text for the top section.

If you insist on editing the graphics, please retrieve a picture without text at http://www.kidlink.org/kie/nls/english/workshop/fifteen_2.jpg .
Some of the other pictures also contain text that you may want to translate. Example: wkshp.gif

You can do this in two ways:

by isolating the picture from the original file, and enhance the web page using a table format and this file.
This is recommended in cases where the Norwegian language translation contains such solutions!
by creating a new picture file.

If you do, here's one efficient way that works with graphic design programs like Paint Shop Pro, or equivalent. Personally, I am using the freeware program AOLpress for my translations work (http://www.aolpress.com):

Load the English language graphics into Paint Shop Pro. Mark the picture part of the file, and save it to disk.
Compose a new web page with the same background color as the picture (#1 above), and create a table on this page to use for composing the desired page.
1. Load the graphics in the appropriate cell.
2. Write the text in the appropriate cell.
  Example: wkshp.gif
  Put the icon in the right cell, and write the text in the left cell using the same font faces, sizes, and colors.
3. Remove the visible border line.
Use Paint Shop Pro, or some equivalent program, to capture the area of the new "picture" as it exists on your new web page. Save it to disk thus overwriting the file it is supposed to replace.
Edit web pages to ensure that the web code for presenting the picture file has the correct length/width measurements. The author (Patti Weeg) has used Comic sans MS for these texts. She also says:
